Can I clean my mattress?

To ensure your product stands the test of time, it is essential to take good care of it and cleaning is part of that. As with all objects that we use daily, mattresses tend to get dirty. And since it isn’t feasible to change your mattress when it gets the slightest bit dirty, you must find suitable cleaning solutions. Not only must you find a way to effectively clean it, but also ensure that it doesn’t damage the mattress.

Here are some ways to clean your mattress:

Clean your mattress with soda crystals

You will find soda crystals in all DIY shops and in some department stores. To use them to clean your mattress, first make sure you are wearing protective gloves. Rubber washing up gloves are great for this. Then put 2 litres of hot water (not boiling) and 2 tablespoons of soda crystals in a large bowl. Mix well. Next, take a clean sponge and soak it in the mixture. Squeeze out the sponge, then, rub the stains on your mattress. Rinse with a cloth, dampened with fresh water and squeezed out to avoid moistening the mattress too much. To dry it off, use a dry cloth to absorb excess water and then use a hairdryer. Another option is to sprinkle talcum powder on the wet area. In this case, it is advised to allow 8 hours to completely dry the area. The talc will also absorb any unpleasant damp smell. It may also help to ventilate the room. Soda crystals act as a great natural detergent.

Clean your mattress using a steam cleaner

Although the soda crystals solution is economical and effective, there are other alternatives. If you have a steam cleaner, they can be a great tool for cleaning your mattress. The steam is able to dissolve stains naturally, as long as they are not too pronounced. A good solution can be to hoover the entire mattress to remove dust, then use soda crystals to clean the most stubborn stains, before steam cleaning the whole mattress evenly.

Don’t have a steam cleaner? No need to panic. It is very easy to rent out this type of equipment. You just need to reserve it when you need it and return it when you are finished. Cleaning a mattress using steam is very simple thanks to equipment that is both efficient and practical!

Clean your mattress with vinegar

White vinegar is a miraculous ingredient. Multi-use, inexpensive and natural - it is a must-have to keep in your cleaning cupboard. As proof of that, you can even use it to clean your mattress. To do so, mix 500ml of white vinegar with 200ml warm water and 2 tablespoons of washing up liquid. Rub the full surface of the mattress with a sponge, paying extra attention to stained areas without scrubbing too hard. To rinse the solution off, use the same technique as recommended for ammonia and soda crystals:  nothing beats a damp cloth. Then, just leave it to dry and admire the results. To speed up the process, you can also use a hairdryer. White vinegar also acts as a disinfectant. Perfect for persistent stains, all you need is a damp sponge or cloth and cold water, white vinegar is remarkable and very useful in a number of contexts! A powerful ally which also isn’t harmful to the environment in any way! Note that white vinegar can also be useful for removing wine stains.

Each stain has its own cleaning solution

To take things a little further, know that certain stains require a particular treatment. For example, a coffee stain (if you are partial to breakfast in bed) can be gotten out with a mixture of equal parts white vinegar and alcohol at 90 degrees. Chocolate should be cleaned with soapy water and white vinegar. Ink stains come out with lemon juice.
